The lofts in the cabins or sheds not only function for additional storage, but they provide stability for the roof and outer walls during transport. Long term they provide stability for the life of the building. Lofts are constructed in 4’, 8’, or 12’ lengths depending on the size of the building you purchase.

If you choose to shorten a loft or remove a loft entirely, the builders must modify the construction to maintain the structural integrity of the building. The builders stabilize the structure with collar ties. Collar ties are constructed with 2x4 lumber and affixed to the upper one-third of the roof rafters the length of the building on pitch roofs. Collar ties prevent the separation of the roof ridge due to wind uplift and provide the required strength and stability for the shed.

On barn-style lofted buildings, if collar ties are added, they are affixed right under the hip (break) in the roof. Others are in the top third of the trusses.
